The library is a great place to work during your academic studies because of its relaxed environment and unlimited access to intellectual content. Tomlinson Library is looking for energetic and helpful students. We have a variety of work to fit a range of interests and personalities, and we offer flexible shifts to fit your class, study, and activity schedules.
CMU students who have been awarded either work-study or MAVworks by the Financial Aid Department are encouraged to apply for a job at the Tomlinson Library. If you’re interested in applying, check out the different position descriptions below and look for openings on the CMU Handshake website.

Job Descriptions
Provide excellent customer service by answering questions in-person or on the phone, assist with room reservations and facilities requests, monitor email accounts, and work on various administrative tasks and projects. May occasionally help with other departments in the library as needed. Hours range Monday–Friday between 8am to 5pm.
Retrieves books, audiovisual materials, and journals from the library stacks and storage facility. Prepares and processes materials for the outgoing and incoming courier shipment (includes computer processing and sorting material into totes). Scans print articles and book chapters and fills electronic journal/e-book chapter requests. Must be detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines. Hours are weekday mornings and Saturdays.
Work in a quiet setting organizing archival materials like photographs, newsletters, and letters. Other tasks may include using a scanner to make high-quality digital versions of archival materials; inventorying collections; and other projects as needed. Attention to detail and a willingness to ask questions are the most important skills for this area. Hours range Monday–Friday between 9am to 5pm.
Work in a quiet, small-group setting processing a variety of materials, performing simple computer assignments and other duties as assigned. Must be detail-oriented. Hours range Monday–Friday between 8am to 5pm.
Library Internships
Special Collections and Archives offers internships for credit to students according to their program requirements. Internship projects are intended to provide students with practical skills, knowledge, and mentorship to help develop their career interests through experience geared toward strengthening resumes and/or graduate applications. Past interns have earned credit in the History and English Programs.
