About Upward Bound
Upward Bound (UB) at Colorado Mesa University is a federally funded college preparatory program designed to support local first-generation, income-eligible students at Central High School and Grand Junction High School as they prepare to enter and succeed in college.
Program eligibility
A potential first-generation college student or a low-income individual.
Potential First-Generation college student means:
- An individual neither of whose parents received a 4-year bachelor's degree.
Low-income individual means:
- An individual whose family's taxable income did not exceed 150% of the poverty level as determined by the U.S. Department of Education.
- An individual with a GPA below 2.5; or
- An individual who has not passed algebra by the completion of their sophomore year; or
- An individual who is not proficient in English Language Arts or math.
Our services
Upward Bound provides the following services and resources to participants

Academic tutoring
Including reading, writing, study skills, math, science and more.

Advising
Preparation for high school and college course selection.

College preparation
Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams and completing college applications.

Financial literacy training
Training for federal and state financial aid programs, scholarships and completing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA)

College exploration trips
Help students find a campus that fits their unique needs.

6-week summer program
Including on-campus living, academic instruction, a week-long college road trip, and social activities.
Funding sources
The United States Department of Education funds Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) TRIO Upward Bound at 92%, $1,344,158. Non-federal funding from CMU at 8%, $93,526.
