On National First-Gen Day, CMU announces official designation as a First Generation-Serving Institution
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is proud to be recognized by the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) as a First Generation-Serving Institution. This designation highlights CMU’s deep commitment to supporting first-generation students—a group that makes up nearly 50% of the university's student population.
On National First-Generation Day, CMU celebrates its effort of ensuring that first-generation students not only have a place to connect, learn, and grow but also thrive in their academic and personal journeys. In 2021, 37% of students enrolled in Colorado’s public higher education institutions were first-generation students. CMU's first-generation population has consistently exceeded this statewide average, reflecting the university’s proactive efforts to make higher education accessible and affordable.
CMU is one of only five four-year institutions in Colorado to receive the enrollment distinction, underscoring the university’s leadership in engaging and enrolling a large portion of first-generation students. Through initiatives like the Early Start Program, the CMU Promise, TRIO, Upward Bound, targeted scholarships and peer mentoring networks, CMU ensures that these students are equipped to succeed. Faculty and staff, many of whom are first-generation graduates themselves, serve as mentors and role models, providing personalized guidance and fostering a sense of belonging.
Beyond recognition, CMU's commitment to first-generation students is reflected in its innovative approach to education. The university emphasizes critical thinking and real-world problem-solving, preparing students for meaningful careers and civic engagement. This focus on teaching students how to think—not what to believe—resonates deeply with first-generation students who are charting new territory for themselves and their families.
This recognition aligns with CMU's broader goal of creating opportunities for all students to succeed, regardless of their background, and reflects the university’s ongoing dedication to making higher education both affordable and transformative.
