Where We Become Mavericks: Dos Rios Elementary

CMU is sparking imagination and curiosity through hands-on learning experiences with the Where We Become Mavericks Initiative

On Monday, March 3rd, CMU Tech's Mechatronics Mobile Learning Lab visited Dos Rios Elementary to promote higher education as part of the Where We Become Mavericks initiative, where CMU visits elementary schools within Mesa County School District 51. Technical Instructor of Mechatronics Robbi Grimm welcomed fifth graders into the lab to teach them about hands-on applications of mechatronics and to show them different examples of robots that students in middle, high school and college have created. The visit inspired students to ask questions and sparked their curiosity about the possibility of future careers through technical education.

Fifth Grade Teacher and Robotics Club Advisor Mary Gholson expressed how much the Mobile Learning Lab visits mean to her students.

"They're able to see something beyond just their neighborhood. They're able to see that there are opportunities out there for them and all they have to do is go looking for them. It presents them with the opportunity to see what's there and to see some possibilities and that they can achieve that as well," said Gholson.

Throughout each session, students became captivated by the idea of possibility so much that when told their time touring the lab was up, they stated that they didn’t want to leave and that the things they were learning were interesting to them.

As students leaned in and interacted with the instructor and machines, the excitement sparked even further. Students stood back in awe as they watched their fellow classmates operate professional machinery with the push of a button.
