Where We Become Mavericks: Thunder Mountain Elementary

Maverick Rugby team visits D51 Mountaineers

On November 19, the Colorado Mesa University Women’s Rugby team visited Thunder Mountain Elementary as part of the Where We Become Mavericks initiative. This program connects CMU student-athletes with local District 51 elementary students to inspire a love of learning and build community.

Excitement filled the room as fifth graders were welcomed by the 10-member rugby team. After introductions, the emcee, a CMU Maverick, explained the theme of the day: curiosity.

The athletes shared one of the university’s seven core values and how it led them to both their sport and academic paths at CMU, highlighting the importance of asking questions and exploring the world around them. The students eagerly engaged, asking about rugby and college life. The athletes answered with stories of their studies and future ambitions, offering a glimpse into what’s possible when curiosity is nurtured.

In small group discussions, the rugby players encouraged students to share their own dreams and interests. They emphasized that staying curious is key to achieving those goals, inspiring the young Mountaineers to explore new possibilities and never stop learning.

By the end of the visit, both students and athletes walked away with a deeper connection and a shared excitement for the future, knowing that curiosity and education provide an opportunity for a better life.
