Neil deGrasse Tyson to Hold Second Show in Asteria Theatre for the Reaching for the Stars Series

After tickets sold out in 24 hours for Neil de Grasse Tyson, CMU secures second show

After an overwhelming response to the inaugural event in the Reaching for the Stars Series, Colorado Mesa University is thrilled to announce a second event featuring world-renowned astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson has been added at the Asteria Theatre. The first show sold out in just 24 hours, and to accommodate the excitement, the new event will take place on Sunday, November 10, with tickets going on sale October 9.

The added show, titled An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies – Part I, will explore the science behind some of Hollywood’s most iconic films. From Star Wars and Armageddon to Titanic and The Martian, Dr. Tyson will break down what the movies got right and wrong about science in an engaging and entertaining presentation. The event will also highlight the surprisingly accurate science found in unexpected place. Attendees can expect a fun and thought-provoking evening that blends science with pop culture.

To ensure accessibility for both the campus community and the general public, CMU has reserved half of the tickets for CMU students, faculty and staff, while the remaining tickets will be available for the public.

“I am extremely proud and excited that CMU is bringing Neil de Grasse Tyson to campus! It will be exciting to have the campus and community gathered together to engage with astronomy and hopefully bring a spotlight to the amazing astronomy community we have here in Western Colorado. There was a frenzy and a bit of confusion over ticket sales for the November 11 event, which left out many of my astronomy students and community members who were unable to buy tickets. The addition of another event on the 10th will give them another chance to participate, which could have wide-reaching implications. Who knows what kind of spark Dr. Tyson might ignite in one of them to perhaps pursue astrophysics as a career? At the very least, I am sure that everyone who attends either of the events will be awestruck, entertained, and learn something new about our incredible universe!” said CMU Assistant Professor of Physics Catherine Whiting, PhD.

Dr. Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium and bestselling author of Astrophysics for People in a Hurry and Starry Messenger, is one of the most recognized voices in science today. His ability to demystify complex scientific concepts while keeping his audience entertained has made him a beloved figure worldwide.

Ticket sales for the second event will open on October 9. Given the high demand for the first show, early booking is strongly encouraged.
