CMU continues to strengthen ties with District 51 at Where We Become Mavericks tailgate
Colorado Mesa University President John Marshall brought the Maverick spirit to Fruita Monument High School’s Homecoming game against Grand Junction High School by grilling for students and families.
The tailgate was filled with camaraderie as Wildcats and Tigers enjoyed a BBQ meal prepared by President Marshall and CMU students. The event, attended by D51 Superintendent Dr. Brian Hill, GJHS Principal Jory Sorensen and FMHS Principal Newt Klusmire, highlighted the growing collaboration between Colorado Mesa University and District 51.
The BBQ was part of the broader Where We Become Mavericks (WWBM) initiative, which strengthens relationships between CMU and local schools. Other WWBM programming includes elementary classes visiting campus to watch theatre arts performances and CMU student-athletes visiting D51 schools to inspire curiosity.
Additionally, CMU's concurrent enrollment program provides high school students the opportunity to take courses at CMU, CMU Tech or at their school and earn college credits while still in high school. This partnership reflects CMU and the district’s commitment to making higher education accessible and affordable.
These collaborative efforts, from academic offerings to community events, underscore CMU's dedication to serving the community. By providing educational pathways and participating in local events, CMU is aspiring to be a Human Scale University and serving as a model of the world we want to create.
