CMU students now have a new space to relax, unwind and connect with friends, thanks to the opening of Arcadia — a one-of-a-kind campus destination designed to foster fun and community.
Located in the University Center, in the area formerly known as The Point, Arcadia offers a fresh take on recreation by blending the nostalgia of analog games with a modern, social atmosphere. Arcadia is designed to be a digital detox zone where students can engage in a variety of activities without the constant presence of screens.
"We carefully considered what we wanted this space to become — a place that truly appeals to students and encourages them to put away their technology, even if just for a little while. After witnessing the enthusiasm during move-in weekend, I believe we got the concept right," said Vice President of Student Services Jody Diers.
The new space offers a variety of classic arcade games like Pac-Man, air hockey, skee-ball, and arcade basketball, all of which students can play using gaming credits. Plans are in motion for students to earn extra gaming credits when they purchase food or drinks. Proceeds from the games will be used to maintain equipment and expand the arcade’s selection. Further opportunities to earn credits without purchases are in the works.
In addition to the games, Arcadia offers plenty of seating and a bar area where students can relax and socialize. The bar serves a variety of food, as well as beer and wine for those of legal age. For students seeking quieter spaces, the university has moved the whiteboards and study areas to the 24-hour study space in the library lobby, ensuring that Arcadia remains a hub for fun and connection.
“I’m very excited and pleased to see a lot more students in the space having fun and just enjoying their time on campus. The Point used to serve a similar purpose, but it felt more institutional and more academic. Arcadia is now a space to decompress and enjoy some downtime with friends or even just on your own," said Director of Student Life Trey Downey. "Students, faculty and staff are all working so hard. I think it’s important to remember everyone deserves some time to just have fun. You only live once, why not enjoy it?”
Arcadia is located next to the west entrance of the University Center.
