President Marshall and D51's Dr. Hill honored graduating high school students during Senior Celebration Day
As the academic year has drawn to a close, Colorado Mesa University and Mesa County Valley School District 51 geared up for one last big event before graduation: Senior Celebration Day. On Wednesday, May 1, CMU traveled to local high schools to recognize the achievements of graduating seniors, presenting scholarship checks totaling over $11 million.
Among the high schools participating in this celebration were Fruita Monument, Grand Junction, Central and Palisade. CMU’s commitment to making higher education affordable is apparent when looking at the amount CMU is investing in local students:
- Fruita Monument: $3,933,800.00
- Grand Junction: $2,508,400.00
- Central: $2,180,800.00
- Palisade: $2,280,000.00
- Caprock: $523,400.00
During Senior Celebration Day, former D51 students turned Mavericks presented a check of the collective scholarship amount with CMU President John Marshall, D51 Superintendent Dr. Brian Hill and the schools’ principals. President Marshall also delivered remarks highlighting the CMU Promise, an idea predicated on CMU’s values, that includes three guarantees:
- An opportunity for a better life, through education.
- Tuition is covered for students living in one of the 22 western Colorado counties whose family earn $65,000 or less.
- To teach students how to think not what to think.
The Senior Celebration Day not only honored the achievements of the graduating class but also underscored the commitment of the community to invest locally to support the future leaders of tomorrow.
