College students all across the country sometimes look to transfer schools. Whether they are leaving a four-year university or community college, the process can often be stressful, confusing, even frightening. Each academic year, Colorado Mesa University receives around 750-900 transfer students.
"I think CMU offers something not a lot of other schools can give to students: large university resources and amenities while maintaining small class sizes. Personally, this was super important to me when looking for a place to transfer to," said CMU transfer student Jackson Engstrom. "I wanted to find somewhere I could maintain the close relationships with professors and students while not feeling that I'm missing out on an authentic college experience. I've found it all here at Mesa."
The CMU Transfer Services team works tirelessly to assist those students and ensure the transition is as smooth and painless as possible, and their hard work is being recognized on a national level.
Colorado Mesa University was awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Honor Roll award by the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society. This award puts CMU on the map as a top transfer destination and was one of only 123 four-year schools named to the 2020 honor roll.
“The Transfer Honor Roll Program identifies colleges and universities that understand the unique needs of community college transfer students and applauds the dynamic pathways these colleges have created to continue fostering student success at the four-year college,” said President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Lynn Tincher-Ladner, PhD.
CMU rewards high-achieving transfer students by allocating them special scholarships and Preliminary Transfer Credit Evaluations so students know how their credits will apply to their intended major. From the first step in their process to the last, the Transfer Services team is always ready and willing to help.
"The Transfer Services Team makes everything very straight forward by helping us match our classes over the phone or evaluating our previous schedules to see which classes they would be equivalent to at the university before I ever stepped foot on campus," said student Dalen Brazelton.
“The Transfer Services team worked to ensure that our online PTK Connect profile represents CMU well, including information regarding academic programs, transfer scholarship opportunities and student resources as well as photographs and videos representing the dynamic Maverick student life,” said Associate Director of Transfer Service Lara Swanson.
According to Swanson, students who transfer to CMU thrive as Mavericks, and it’s largely in part to the welcoming atmosphere.
“The staff and faculty endeavor to provide a personal experience for every student so they know that we care about them as human beings. Our desire is that transfer students thrive as CMU Mavericks and discover just how they will blaze their own trail in the world,” said Swanson.
