Customer Service – Provide customer service at the Checkout & Reserves desk, check books and materials in and out, assist patrons with computers and photocopiers, retrieve library materials, scan library materials, and assist with opening and closing the Library. Hours available are from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after normal library hours.

Interlibrary Loan – Request materials from other libraries and send out requested materials, process materials for the morning courier, retrieve books and journals, and scan library materials. Must be detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines. Hours are weekday mornings.

Reference – Assist reference librarians and other staff with word and data processing, creating and maintaining resource lists, scanning documents, and testing web-accessible resource links; provide back-up support to the Checkout & Reserves and Interlibrary Loan departments; provide customer service throughout the library as needed. Hours typically range between 8 am and 9 pm.

Shelving & Stack Maintenance – Shelve and shift books to keep the library collection in good order, provide customer service, and scan library materials. Must be detail-oriented. Must routinely transfer book totes weighing up to 30 pounds to rolling carts for transport. Hours available Sunday 1 pm to midnight, and Monday - Thursday 4 pm to midnight.

Special Collections – Work in a quiet, small group setting helping to process and scan archival and digital materials, and perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Services – Work in a quiet, small group setting helping to check in, process, repair, and scan materials, and perform other duties as assigned.

Student Employment Guidelines

CMU students who have been awarded either work-study or MAVworks by the Financial Aid Department are encouraged to apply for a job in the John U. Tomlinson Library. View eligibility requirements in the Work Life tab of MAVzone, and view CMU job openings on the Student Employment website.

Library supervisors review applications and contact selected applicants to arrange interviews. If hired, you will be asked to complete additional paperwork, and will need to bring either your Social Security card (not a copy) and photo ID or valid passport to complete a Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification, and a voided, blank check to enroll in direct deposit (required).
