Student FAQs
As a student you have two options when it comes to working while in school, on or off campus.
On-campus employment opportunities are where you can work an hourly position that is paid either through Work-Study or Student Assist funds.
Off-campus employment opportunities are where you find employment at any of our local businesses.
Even if you were not awarded work study, many of our on-campus departments are able to hire students using Student Assist. This means you are paid through the department's operating budget instead of your financial aid package.
To find employment through Student Assist it is not necessary for the student to complete the FAFSA.
Look on Handshake and filter for jobs "Close to Campus" in your search.
If you were awarded work-study you can further filter your on-campus job search by selecting All Filters and checking "Work Study". This will show you on-campus jobs meant for only work-study eligible student employees.
If you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you may be awarded state or federal work-study funds.
If you are awarded, your award offer will list work-study as one of the types of aid. Similar to other types of financial aid you must "accept" your work-study offer and complete the required terms and conditions before being authorized to use the funds.
You may qualify for MAVworks.
MAVworks is a type of internally funded work-study award available to qualifying students who complete the online application. Awards are offered on a first come first serve basis, as long as funds are available.
Applying students must meet the following qualifications:
- Completed FAFSA/CASFA
* International students who are unable to qualify for Federal or State Financial Aid will need to have obtained proper work visas - Have a GPA of 3.0 or better
* Continuing students will be considered based on their CMU GPA
* New students will be considered based on HS or Transfer GPA - Be ineligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant
- Not have been awarded State or Federal Work Study within the same academic year
If you cannot qualify for MAVworks, then don't forget about the many Student Assist opportunities on campus as well.
Student Employment offers a wide range of positions, which require different degrees of skill or experience.
The campus wage scale starts at minimum wage for the State of Colorado goes up from there depedning on the position and responsibilities. Wages are in relation to the type of duties performed and in consideration of other student worker wage rates in similar jobs.
If you are employed under work-study, the total amount you can earn cannot exceed the amount on your award notice.
As a Student Employee you are limited to 20 hours per week. The scheduling of hours to be worked will be arranged by you and your supervisor.
You can never work during hours that you are scheduled to be attending class.
Once you have been offered an on-campus job your hiring supervisor will email Payroll a Work Authorization Card.
If you have not worked for CMU in the past, Payroll will send you an email to complete a New Hire Packet. Once completed, you will return the packet to the Human Resources Department in Lowell Heiny Hall.
Required Items to complete the New Hire Packet:
- Acceptable original I-9 documents (Most common is a Social Security Card and a valid driver's license or state issued ID. Photocopies are not allowed)
- Direct Deposit Information (Canceled check, deposit slip or official document from your bank that contains your account and routing number. Direct deposit is required by CMU Fiscal Rules)
Be aware that just because you signed on your award notice that you have "accepted" work-study, this does not mean that you have the award indefinitely. Due to the high demand for work-study awards, you will be given six weeks from the time school starts to find employment. If you are unable to find an on campus position, the award will be canceled.
