On January 27, 2021 Tim Foster announced his plan to retire as president of Colorado Mesa University, kicking off a nationwide search to fill the position. Members of the Board of Trustees and the CMU community were selected to lead the search for CMU's new president. The nine-person committee represented a cross-section of university stakeholders including members from the trustees, faculty, staff, students and broader geographical region.
Following a comprehensive and competitive search, which attracted the interest of applicants from across the country, the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees entered into negotiations on April 29 with John Marshall to serve as the next president of CMU.
