WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University is rooted in countless moments where faculty and staff transcend traditional roles to break down barriers, forge human connections, and inspire others through the transformative power of education; AND
WHEREAS the arts—encompassing theatre, music, and dance—serve as vital cultural touchstones, nurturing human intimacy and connection, and contributing to the holistic development of individuals and communities; AND
WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University is committed to enriching the human experience through exposure to the performing arts, recognizing that the arts are essential to fostering empathy, cultural awareness, and emotional connection; AND
WHEREAS the University proudly serves a diverse student body, including first-generation, low-income, and non-traditional students, demonstrating that the arts provide a universal language that transcends socioeconomic barriers; AND
WHEREAS academic leaders at Colorado Mesa University not only teach and advise students, but also mentor faculty, engage in creative scholarship, and cultivate cultural and artistic excellence; AND
WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees hold in high regard the culture of servant leadership, which extends beyond academia to touch every aspect of the university and community life; AND
WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves the region and the State of Colorado by cultivating a deep appreciation for the arts, contributing to the well-being of society and addressing complex cultural and social issues through creative expression; AND
WHEREAS Associate Professor of Theatre Arts, Mr. Maurice LaMee, and Professor of Music, Dr. Darin Kamstra, have played pivotal roles in building vibrant, interdisciplinary programs in theatre, dance, and music, that bridge education and artistic expression; AND
WHEREAS through their dedication and leadership, Mr. LaMee and Dr. Kamstra have expanded access to the arts through camps, festivals, and world-class performances, enriching the lives of students and the broader community; AND
WHEREAS Mr. LaMee and Dr. Kamstra have contributed immeasurably to the opening of the Asteria Theatre, ensuring that it stands as a beacon for the performing arts, meeting the highest standards of artistic and educational excellence;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees hereby awards the October 2024 Human Scale University Champion Award to Associate Professor of Theatre, Mr. Maurice LaMee, and Professor of Music, Dr. Darin Kamstra, in recognition of their tireless efforts and profound contributions to bringing the transformative power of the arts to our campus, region, and state.
