A CMU Tradition Thrives at Powderhorn

Mavs Take Over the Mountain continues its tradition of fun and community on the slopes

On Saturday, February 2, CMU and Powderhorn Mountain Resort teamed up once again for another epic Mavs Take Over the Mountain event. Powderhorn was busting at the seams with CMU students, alumni and family members, who all came together to celebrate being a Maverick.

"Mavs Take Over the Mountain is all about bringing CMU alumni and students together for an unforgettable day at Powderhorn. The energy, the giveaways and the Maverick pride were incredible. Experiencing it for the first time, I loved seeing our community come together to celebrate and make memories on the mountain!" said Executive Director of Alumni and Career Services Sean Rubalcaba.

The CMU Student Life team and CMU Alumni Association put together a vibrant experience on the resort deck that created a fun and lively atmosphere, adding another level of excitement and energy to the day. An electrifying DJ spun both the latest hits and timeless classics with energetic flair while exciting giveaways and prizes kept the crowd buzzing with anticipation.

"This was my first time at Mavs Take Over the Mountain, and it was such an amazing experience seeing the power of connection and community through this event,” said Assistant Director of the Career Center for Alumni and Career Services Brendan Ryan. “It was inspiring to see CMU students interacting with alumni in such a fun and engaging way. Watching our CMU community bond over shared experiences on the slopes and celebrate the Maverick spirit was truly rewarding, and it’s events like these that remind me why I love being part of the Mavily.”

Similar to past events, Rowdy, the university’s mascot, was in attendance to cheer everyone on as they enjoyed the snow. Beyond the great discounts on lift tickets, equipment rentals and skiing lessons that Powderhorn Mountain Resort provides, they reinforced the true purpose of this event: to engage CMU students with the community and beautiful landscape surrounding the university.

For many students, this was their first time experiencing the snow. This event is geared towards giving students the opportunity to have new experiences, engage with the community, experience the beauty of The Grand Valley and network with CMU alumni.

“As a CMU student, Mavs Take over the Mountain is one of my favorite events I look forward to every year! It was an unforgettable experience and was packed with so much energy throughout the day!” said CMU senior Trevor Skrine. “From the people to the music and prizes, it’s a great place for making memories with some of your closest friends with a chance to make new ones.”

As the sun came out, Timberline Bank joined the excitement to present the Colorado Mesa University Alpine Ski Team with a $1,000 check. This generous gift will help support the team with travel, equipment and other necessities that drive their success. Mavs Take Over the Mountain took place during the third weekend of racing for the team this season.

Mavs Take Over the Mountain has been a beloved annual tradition, and its popularity continues to grow. It not only inspires students to embark on new adventures but also rekindles the Maverick spirit in alumni, bringing back memories of their vibrant community and unforgettable experiences.
