Alternative loans are provided by a third party lender and can be used in combination with other financial aid like grants, federal loans, scholarships. Two important things to consider in an alternative loan are interest rate (fixed is typically preferred over flexible) and repayment options (ask your lender if they have flexibility when it comes to repayment).
