The Unconventional Energy Center was established in response to a community driven process which identified the need to establish Mesa County as an epicenter of energy innovation. After receiving a $1.6 million grant from the Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District in 2011, Colorado Mesa University matched the grant 100% and established this Center within the Redifer Institute. The primary focus of the Center is using proceeds from its endowment to focus on applied undergraduate research projects that help unconventional energy development practitioners with regulatory predictability, reducing operating costs, increasing the effectiveness of extraction and reducing impacts on the environment. In addition to applied research, the Center focuses on curriculum enhancement within the existing academic programs and workforce development measures aimed at growing the pipeline of well prepared students within targeted disciplines at Colorado Mesa University and Western Colorado Community College. This multi-faceted approach builds upon past successes and positions our community as a regional hub of unconventional energy development.
