Emergency medicine is one of the fastest growing fields within the health care industry and it offers many diverse job opportunities throughout the country. The Emergency Medical Services program helps students develop skills to care for patients in their home, at the scene of an accident and during transport in an ambulance. Students learn how to assess the patient’s condition, manage respiratory and cardiac problems, and take care of trauma injuries. The program includes didactic classroom lectures, clinical rotations within area emergency rooms and ride time with local fire departments.
Why choose the Emergency Medical Services program at CMU Tech?
- Program meets the national registry standards for basic level training for the emergency medical technician, and fire agency and ambulance requirements for employment.
- Clinical hours and experience in emergency rooms and ambulances are included
- Graduates are prepared to take registry exam for national and state certification
- Course activities include: Safety Fair at Mesa Mall, ambulance operations and driving, interactive training with police academy cadets, Little Mavs training with small children, CPR/AED training and certification life-like scenarios, and National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) skills practice and check-offs

The EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) represents the most advanced level of training of the emergency medical technician system. At this level, the caregiver receives advanced training in the use of procedures, medications and equipment to manage medical emergencies and traumatic injuries in patients of all ages. EMT-Paramedics provide the most extensive pre-hospital care. Through performance of assessments and providing medical care, their goal is to prevent and reduce mortality and morbidity due to illness and injury. Paramedics primarily provide care to emergency patients in an out-of-hospital setting. The program prepares the graduate to take the NREMT examination and become certified as an EMT-paramedic.
Academic Requirements for Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Technician-ParamedicThe EMT-Basic represents the first component of the emergency medical technician system. An EMT-B is trained to care for patients at the scene of an accident and while transporting patients by ambulance to the hospital under medical direction. The EMT-B has the emergency skills to assess a patient’s condition and manage respiratory, cardiac and trauma emergencies. Formal courses are combined with skills practice and time in an emergency room or ambulance for a total of 195 contact hours. The program also provides instruction and practice in dealing with bleeding, fractures, airway obstruction, cardiac arrest and emergency childbirth. Students learn how to use and maintain common emergency equipment, such as backboards, suction devices, splints, oxygen delivery systems and stretchers. Graduates of approved EMT-Basic training programs who pass a written and practical examination administered by the State certifying agency or the NREMT earn the title “Registered EMT-Basic.”
