Colorado Mesa University Residence Life has many student leader opportunities, some of the most rewarding being those that are offered in summer. There are three main positions for Residence Life and the information for those opportunities is below.
Conference Assistants (CAs) serve as liaisons between Summer Conference guests and the Department of Residence Life at Colorado Mesa University. Under the supervision of the Summer Conference Coordinator, CAs assist in the preparation of residence hall accommodations for various summer programs and serve as resources regarding issues related to the campus and local community. In previous years, the Summer Conference program has hosted religious youth groups, sports camps, family/student orientations, non-profit organizations, etc. CMU Residence Life has also been the proud host for housing Special Olympics Colorado participants, volunteers, and families since 2014. Please note that this summer there will be two types of Conference Assistants, those with 10-week contract positions and those with 12-week contract positions.
The Summer Resident Assistant (RA) serves as liaisons between Summer Conference guests, Colorado Mesa University summer school students, and Residence Life at CMU. Under the supervision of the Summer RA Coordinator, the RA assists in the preparation of residence hall and apartment accommodations for various summer programs, CMU students, and serve as resources regarding issues related to the campus and local community, and the apartments for the CMU summer school student population.

SUMMER CAMPS AND CONFERENCE ASSISTANT
Position Description
Position Overview:
The Summer Camps and Conference Assistant (CA) serves as a critical link between Colorado Mesa University and its diverse range of summer conference guests. CAs are responsible for providing excellent customer service, ensuring the smooth operation of residence hall accommodations, and serving as knowledgeable resources for guests. This position involves a high level of interaction with various summer programs, including sports camps, religious groups, student orientations, and other community organizations.
CAs will work under the supervision of the Summer Conference Coordinator and Summer Conference Team-leads, contributing to a positive guest experience by addressing needs, resolving concerns, and ensuring facilities are ready for each group’s arrival. Prior Residence Life experience is not required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Guest Relations & Customer Service:
- Represent CMU with a professional, courteous demeanor, serving as the first point of contact for conference guests.
- Provide accurate information about campus facilities, local attractions, and community resources.
- Handle guest inquiries, complaints, and emergency situations promptly and professionally.
- Facility Management & Preparation:
- Assist with the preparation of residence hall rooms for incoming guests, including linen distribution, room inspections, and general upkeep.
- Conduct thorough room and building inventories pre- and post-occupancy; assess and report any damages or maintenance issues.
- Perform check-ins and check-outs, ensuring all paperwork is completed accurately.
- Assist with cleaning, organizing, and setting up spaces for conference use (e.g., meeting rooms, lounges).
- Maintain showrooms in ready condition for orientation tours.
- Operational Support:
- Facilitate conference arrivals and departures, including handling registration, issuing keys, and guiding guests to their accommodations.
- Serve on a rotating duty schedule, including evening and weekend shifts, to ensure the safety and security of residential facilities.
- Monitor and manage building access, ensuring only authorized individuals enter.
- Support conference events, activities, and special requests as needed.
- Deliver mail and packages to guests and summer residents.
- Team Collaboration & Communication:
- Participate in staff training, weekly meetings, and regular check-ins with supervisors.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, facilities staff, and external vendors to support conference operations.
- Obtain pre-approval from the Summer Conference Coordinator for any outside commitments that may impact job responsibilities.
- Administrative & Additional Duties:
- Complete incident reports, maintenance requests, and other documentation in a timely manner.
- Assist with room setups for special events, including technology support (e.g., A/V equipment) if needed.
- Educate and inform guests about university policies and safety protocols.
- Serve as a positive ambassador of CMU, upholding all university policies, state laws, and community standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the summer conference program.
Compensation:
- Guaranteed weekly stipend at $15.75 per hour for up to 35 hours per week.
- Complimentary single room accommodation in a residence hall for the duration of employment.
- Opportunities for extended employment based on performance and department needs.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at CMU, having completed at least 24 credit hours.
- Must be enrolled in classes for the 2025-2026 academic year.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application.
- Good conduct standing with Colorado Mesa University.
- Allowed to take no more than 3 online credit hours per summer term.
Employment Timeline:
- 10-week option: May 20, 2025 – July 29, 2025
- 13-week option: May 20, 2025 – August 18, 2025
- Additional employment may be available based on performance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in customer service, hospitality, or Residence Life.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and conference needs.
- Familiarity with event management and logistical coordination is a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Must reside on campus for the entire duration of employment.
- Ability to lift and carry items up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, and navigate across campus for extended periods.
Additional Notes:
- This position involves a significant amount of evening and weekend work.
- Staff will have designated “all hands on deck” days based on conference schedules.
- Adherence to CMU’s dress code and conduct policies is required at all times.

Position Description
The Summer Resident Assistant (RA) serves as a liaison between Summer Conference guests, Colorado Mesa University summer school students, and the Department of Residence Life at CMU. Under the supervision of a Residence Life Coordinator, the RA assists in the preparation of residence hall and apartment accommodations for various summer programs, CMU students, and serve as resources regarding issues related to the campus and local community, and the apartments for the CMU summer school student population.
Prior Department of Residence Life experience is required.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an information resource and respond to the needs of conference guests.
- Report and follow up on necessary maintenance concerns.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Uphold all laws, policies, and procedures of the United States of America, State of Colorado, Colorado Mesa University, and Residence Life.
- Participate in staff training as well as weekly staff meetings throughout the summer.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, supervisors, facilities staffs, and guests.
- Obtain the pre-approval of all non-CMU related commitments from the Coordinator.
- Reside in assigned room during entire employment with Summer Conferences.
- Serve as a positive representative of CMU.
- Be self-sufficient and willing to “go above and beyond the call of duty.”
- Deliver mail to residents as necessary.
- Perform check-ins and check-outs, as well as complete all paperwork for summer housing residents.
- Responsible for check-in, check-out, and assessing damages for all students living on assigned floor or in assigned apartment complex.
- Responsible for completing accurate, neat, precise, and timely paperwork including but not limited to incident reports, maintenance requests, and program paperwork.
- Responsible for informing and educating students about; their rights and responsibilities as students as stated in the Colorado Mesa University Student Handbook, Colorado Mesa University Residence Life Contract. This includes understanding and supporting the philosophy and purpose of these community standards and responsibilities.
- Be consistent in terms of enforcement of community standards as a staff as well as with individuals on the floor/complex. Shares with all staff the responsibility of responding to student behavior throughout campus which violates community standards. Be flexible when situations warrants, but consider immediate and long term results as well.
- Responsible for responding to student behavior concerns which violate Residence Life community standards, procedures and/or expectations whether or not on duty. This responsibility involves notifying the Summer Conference Coordinator of inappropriate behavior and utilizing housing conduct procedures.
Compensation
- Stipend that guarantees 30-35 hours per week at $14.42/hour
- Single room in a residence hall for the period of the appointment

Eligibility and Limitations
RAs must currently be undergraduate students who:
- Have completed 24 or more credits and are enrolled in class for the 2024-2025 year
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application
- Good conduct standing with Colorado Mesa University
- Allowed to take no more than 3 credit hours in the summer per term at CMU

- Employment period may consist of a ten week or twelve week period dependent on need and availability.

SUMMER CONFERENCE TEAM-LEAD
Position Description
Position Overview:
The Summer Camps and Conference Team-Lead serves as a vital student leader within Residence Life, helping to create a positive and welcoming environment for summer conference guests. This role is an excellent opportunity for those interested in developing skills in leadership, supervision, communication, and hospitality management. Reporting to the Professional Staff Summer Coordinator, Team-Leads will oversee a team of 10-12 student staff members, guiding them in providing exceptional service to summer campers, conference attendees, and other guests.
Throughout the summer, Team-Leads will enhance their knowledge of university resources, academic programs, CMU athletics, and local community offerings to serve as mentors and resources for guests. This hands-on experience aims to prepare students for potential careers in student affairs, sports management, hospitality, event management, or related fields.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous Residence Life, sports management, or hospitality experience
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Supervision
- Assist in the recruiting, training, and supervising a team of Conference Assistants (CAs), focusing on mentorship, hospitality, conflict resolution, technology use, crisis management, and team building.
- Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to CAs, fostering professional growth and team cohesion.
- Organize and lead weekly team meetings to address concerns, celebrate successes, and strategize for upcoming conferences and events.
- Take a leadership role in coordinating the arrival, check-in, and departure processes for summer camps and conference guests.
Guest Relations and Customer Service
- Serve as a primary point of contact for conference guests, ensuring a seamless experience from arrival to departure.
- Address guest inquiries, resolve issues promptly, and act as a liaison between guests and university departments.
- Assist in managing the Summer Conference Office, including handling guest reservations, room assignments, and key card and hard key distribution.
- Implement customer service best practices to ensure high satisfaction among conference attendees.
Event Planning and Operations
- Collaborate with campus departments such as Admissions, Athletics, and Facilities to support large-scale events, conferences, and athletic camps.
- Assist with the coordination of logistics for summer programs, such as room setups.
- Assist in overseeing the scheduling and use of university facilities for conferences, workshops, and events.
- Conduct pre-event walkthroughs and post-event evaluations to ensure continuous improvement.
Administrative and Compliance
- Uphold all laws, policies, and procedures of the United States, the State of Colorado, Colorado Mesa University, and Residence Life.
- Assist in the development and implementation of safety and emergency protocols, including crisis response and evacuation procedures.
- Monitor the cleanliness, safety, and maintenance of residence halls and event spaces.
- Maintain accurate records of conference activities, guest feedback, and incident reports.
Professional Development
- Participate in professional development opportunities provided by Residence Life and other campus departments.
- Reflect on personal growth and skill development throughout the summer, identifying areas of strength and improvement.
- Network with campus professionals to explore potential career paths in student affairs, hospitality, or event management.
Other Duties as Assigned
- Support Residence Life staff with various tasks related to summer operations, including inventory management, facility inspections, and administrative support.
- Serve as a positive representative of Colorado Mesa University, embodying the values of inclusivity, service, and excellence.
- Take on additional projects or responsibilities as directed by the Manager of Operations and the Professional Staff Summer Coordinator.
- This position offers a unique chance to gain hands-on experience in leadership, event coordination, sports management, and hospitality management, setting the stage for future career opportunities in a variety of fields.
Compensation
- A stipend based on a guaranteed 40-hour work week, compensated at $16.92 per hour.
- Complimentary single room accommodation in a residence hall for the duration of the appointment, offered as a scholarship.
