Colorado Mesa University Residence Life has many student leader opportunities, some of the most rewarding being those that are offered in summer. There are three main positions for Residence Life and the information for those opportunities is below.
Conference Assistants (CAs) serve as liaisons between Summer Conference guests and the Department of Residence Life at Colorado Mesa University. Under the supervision of the Summer Conference Coordinator, CAs assist in the preparation of residence hall accommodations for various summer programs and serve as resources regarding issues related to the campus and local community. In previous years, the Summer Conference program has hosted religious youth groups, sports camps, family/student orientations, non-profit organizations, etc. CMU Residence Life has also been the proud host for housing Special Olympics Colorado participants, volunteers, and families since 2014. Please note that this summer there will be two types of Conference Assistants, those with 10-week contract positions and those with 12-week contract positions.
The Summer Resident Assistant (RA) serves as liaisons between Summer Conference guests, Colorado Mesa University summer school students, and Residence Life at CMU. Under the supervision of the Summer RA Coordinator, the RA assists in the preparation of residence hall and apartment accommodations for various summer programs, CMU students, and serve as resources regarding issues related to the campus and local community, and the apartments for the CMU summer school student population.

Position Description

No prior Residence Life work experience is required.
Responsibilities
- Operate the Summer Conference office
- Assist with conference arrivals and departures
- Conduct room and building inventories
- Serve as an information resource and respond to the needs of conference guests
- Report and follow up on necessary maintenance concerns
- Offer excellent customer service
- Uphold all laws, policies, and procedures of the United States of America, State of Colorado, Colorado Mesa University, and Residence Life
- Participate in staff training and weekly staff meetings
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, supervisors, facilities staffs, and guests
- Obtain the pre-approval of all work and activity related commitments from the Summer Conference Coordinator
- Flexibility in work availability as required by the weekly schedule. Based on conference schedules, several dates will be deemed “all staff” work days
- Work on a rotating duty schedule decided by the Summer Conference Coordinator
- Follow all guidelines as outlined in the Summer Conference Staff manual
- Actively contribute to building preparation for camp arrivals (laundry, room inspections etc.)
- Reside in assigned room on campus during entire employment with Summer Conference
- Serve as a positive representative of Colorado Mesa University
- Assist with other duties as necessary
Compensation
- Stipend that guarantees 35 hours per week at $14.42/hour
- Single room in a residence hall for the period of the appointment
- Excellent experience in leadership, teambuilding, and customer service
Eligibility and Limitations
CAs must currently be undergraduate students who:
- Have completed 24 or more credits and enrolled in class for the 2024-2025 year
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application
- Good conduct standing with Colorado Mesa University
- Allowed to take no more than 3 credit hours in the summer per term at CMU
Timeline
- Employment period:
- May 20, 2024 and concludes July 29, 2024 (ten weeks)
- May 20, 2024 – August 18, 2024 (thirteen weeks)
Employment may be extended based on performance and departmental needs.

Position Description

Under the supervision of a Residence Life Coordinator, the RA assists in the preparation of residence hall and apartment accommodations for various summer programs, CMU students, and serve as resources regarding issues related to the campus and local community, and the apartments for the CMU summer school student population.
Prior Department of Residence Life experience is required.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an information resource and respond to the needs of conference guests.
- Report and follow up on necessary maintenance concerns.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Uphold all laws, policies, and procedures of the United States of America, State of Colorado, Colorado Mesa University, and Residence Life.
- Participate in staff training as well as weekly staff meetings throughout the summer.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, supervisors, facilities staffs, and guests.
- Obtain the pre-approval of all non-CMU related commitments from the Coordinator.
- Reside in assigned room during entire employment with Summer Conferences.
- Serve as a positive representative of CMU.
- Be self-sufficient and willing to “go above and beyond the call of duty.”
- Deliver mail to residents as necessary.
- Perform check-ins and check-outs, as well as complete all paperwork for summer housing residents.
- Responsible for check-in, check-out, and assessing damages for all students living on assigned floor or in assigned apartment complex.
- Responsible for completing accurate, neat, precise, and timely paperwork including but not limited to incident reports, maintenance requests, and program paperwork.
- Responsible for informing and educating students about; their rights and responsibilities as students as stated in the Colorado Mesa University Student Handbook, Colorado Mesa University Residence Life Contract. This includes understanding and supporting the philosophy and purpose of these community standards and responsibilities.
- Be consistent in terms of enforcement of community standards as a staff as well as with individuals on the floor/complex. Shares with all staff the responsibility of responding to student behavior throughout campus which violates community standards. Be flexible when situations warrants, but consider immediate and long term results as well.
- Responsible for responding to student behavior concerns which violate Residence Life community standards, procedures and/or expectations whether or not on duty. This responsibility involves notifying the Summer Conference Coordinator of inappropriate behavior and utilizing housing conduct procedures.

Position Title: Summer Camps and Conferences Team Leader
Department: Residence Life
Reports to: Summer Conferences Coordinator & Assistant Director of Residence Life
Summary: This summer position will challenge a current degree-seeking student to apply skills towards assisting our summer camps and conferences staff and developing professional relationships with other campus offices. This position will also require evening and weekend work as our camps and conferences are continually changing over the course of the summer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Approximately 30-35 hours a week split between in-office time and on-call situations for summer staff
- Responds to crisis situations as part of the on-call campus duty rotation
- Assist in the supervision and day-to-day operations of summer camps and conferences on campus
- Make presentations to incoming campers on rules and expectations within the halls
- Participate/Lead weekly professional and student staff meetings
- Assist in the training and supervision of summer conference staff
- Coordinate relationship between Residence Life and dining, athletics, custodial and facilities staff
- Attends all camps and conferences check-ins and check-outs
- Assists with billing and invoicing of summer camps and conferences
- Assists with new student orientation residence hall tours, tabling, events, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position assists in training and supervising the summer conference staff; 12-14 Conference Assistants (CAs).
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate for this position will be able to demonstrate a balance between personal and professional commitments and function as a member of a team. The candidate will also be open-minded and collaborative in their approach. Other qualities that would be reflective of a successful candidate would be: crisis management experience, prior supervisory experience, experience with learning goals/outcomes, experience with residential curriculum, experience with planning and executing student staff training.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
CMU is looking for a current student that is in the process of attaining their Bachelor’s degree at CMU and is seeking a summer experience to help them grow in college student personnel or student affairs related fields. Only those candidates who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, but have not yet graduated from the program will be interviewed.
TEAM LEADER CONTRACT DATES
This position requires the team leader to move in the weekend of May 18, 2024 and starts on Sunday, May 19, 2024. The end date for this position is Sunday, August 4, 2024 with the intern moving out shortly after. The position is approximately 11 weeks in length.
COMPENSATION
Compensation is a housing assignment, as well as a stipend.
