The 2023-2024 academic year marked another milestone for Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) Upward Bound program, which continues to impact students in Mesa County Valley School District 51. Designed to empower low-income, first-generation high school students, the program opens pathways to higher education and helps participants realize their academic aspirations.
Throughout the year, the accomplishments of Upward Bound students showcased the program's success. 100% of program participants advanced to the next grade level or graduated from high school and 77% of graduating seniors enrolled in college immediately after high school, exceeding the program’s expectations. Additionally, 68% of seniors completed a rigorous program of study, preparing them to face the challenges of higher education with confidence.
The academic achievements didn’t stop there. Four students earned the prestigious Seal of Biliteracy, demonstrating proficiency in multiple languages. Twelve participants were recognized with Academic Letter honors for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher, including four students who achieved a perfect 4.0. The Class of 2024 also secured more than $350,000 in scholarships and grants, reflecting their hard work and determination.
The program’s impact extended into the summer when 17 students participated in a six-week program at CMU designed to prepare them for college. The students participated in daily coursework in math, English and American Sign Language, as well as leadership workshops and visits to colleges across the state. Hands-on activities such as a community service project with a local animal shelter, outdoor adventures with Colorado Canyons Association and skill-building challenges like cooking competitions and team-building exercises added depth to their summer experience.
The program, funded through a federal Department of Education grant, earned full Prior Experience Points for exceeding its goals, showcasing the impact of the program’s initiatives. Key community partnerships with organizations such as Kids Aid, Colorado Canyons Association, Mesa County Workforce Center and Riverside Education Centers have further enhanced program offerings and supported students in their journey toward higher education.
“Upward Bound at CMU continues to be a beacon of hope and opportunity for students in Mesa County,” said Program Director Shelby Burroughs Pryzgoda. “We’re proud to celebrate their achievements and look forward to supporting more students in achieving their dreams.”
As the Upward Bound program grows, it remains a vital resource for students hoping to overcome barriers and reach their dreams. The achievements of the past year reflect the determination of the students and the dedication of the Upward Bound team and their community partners.
