Colorado River District Invests $300,000 in CMU Water

Grant supports leadership, innovation and water policy expertise on the Western Slope

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado — Colorado Mesa University’s Ruth Powell Hutchins Water Center has been awarded a $300,000 grant from the Colorado River District to expand its impact as a leader in water policy, research and education on the Western Slope. CMU will match the grant with an additional $300,000 investment, further strengthening the Water Center’s ability to drive meaningful solutions for Colorado’s water future.

This investment will support the growth of the Water Center over the next three years, including hiring an executive director and developing a long-term strategic vision for the organization. By enhancing research, leadership and collaboration, the Water Center will continue to serve as a hub for water resource innovation—shaped by the unique challenges and opportunities of Western Colorado.

“At CMU, we take pride in being a voice for Western Colorado, and we see the Water Center as central to that mission,” said Colorado Mesa University President John Marshall. “With this investment from the Colorado River District—matched by CMU—we are establishing a strong, foundational hub for water research and policy rooted in Western Slope expertise, helping students and professionals drive solutions for our region’s water future.”
