GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado — Colorado Mesa University is offering free tax assistance through the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This program provides basic tax return preparation to qualifying individuals on the Western Slope, ensuring they receive reliable and professional assistance at no cost.
For over 50 years, the VITA program has helped individuals complete their tax returns accurately and efficiently, including those earning $67,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers.
While the IRS oversees the program, local VITA sites are run by IRS partners and staffed by certified volunteers, including accounting students, accounting faculty and community members. Non-accounting faculty provide additional assistance with evaluation services, and language students assist with translation support. The program also benefits from collaborations with several external partners, including accounting firms like Eide Bailly and DWC CPAs and Advisors.
“Filing taxes can be overwhelming, especially for individuals who may not have access to professional help,” said Instructor of Accounting Gary Hypes. "Through VITA, our students and volunteers help ease that burden for community members while gaining valuable experience applying their skills with real clients and tax returns."
Those who qualify can take advantage of several benefits, including electronic filing and direct deposit of refunds. VITA volunteers at CMU undergo rigorous IRS training and certification, ensuring they meet or exceed federal tax law standards. Each return prepared at a VITA site goes through a quality review process before being filed, ensuring accuracy and compliance while maintaining taxpayer confidentiality.
Every year, thousands of VITA volunteers nationwide assist millions of taxpayers, offering both direct preparation services and Facilitated Self-Assistance options. At CMU, volunteers are dedicated to making a positive impact by providing high-quality tax preparation services to those who need it most.
VITA services at CMU will be available through April 5. Call 970.248.1395 to schedule an appointment.
