Civic Forum to Host Film Screening of XCLD: The Story of Cancel Culture

Panel discussion to follow with CMU President John Marshall, filmmaker Ferne Pearlstein, comedian Judy Gold and special guests

GRAND JUNCTION, CO — Colorado Mesa University's Asteria Theatre will host CMU’s Civic Forum as a part of CMU’s ongoing efforts to foster civil dialogue. Ferne Pearlstein, whose film, The Last Laugh, was a featured event during Holocaust Awareness Series Spring 2023, will return with her latest film, XCLD: The Story of Cancel Culture, on October 8, 2024.

The film, produced by Trevor Noah, explores the notion of “cancellation,” which grew out of a desire to hold people accountable for bad behavior (especially racist or misogynistic language).  XCLD is a nuanced look at this provocative and controversial issue, from its long history in different forms, to its contemporary iterations.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Pearlstein along with CMU President John Marshall, comedian Judy Gold, who is featured in the film, and special guests. Tickets for the screening and panel discussion are free to the public but must be secured at CMUstages.com/tickets.

Gold will also headline a comedy show in the Asteria Theatre on October 9, 2024.

Judy Gold has had stand-up specials on HBO, Comedy Central and LOGO. She was a part of Netflix’s Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration. She is the author of Yes I Can Say That: When They Come For The Comedians, We Are All In Trouble, a critically acclaimed book about free speech and cancel culture which debuted as the number one comedy release on Amazon and was featured in the New York Times Book Review. Judy is also host of the hit podcast, It’s Judy’s Show with Judy Gold.

Tickets for both events are now available at CMUstages.com/tickets.
