Strategic ways to maximize your generosity
Smart giving, also known as planned giving or legacy giving, is more than a donation, it’s a strategic approach geared towards maximizing the impact of a donor’s generosity. By carefully planning contributions, donors can make a lasting difference in the lives of students at Colorado Mesa University and directly witness the effects of their kindness.
Joyce Owens, a dedicated donor to CMU, has seen the power of smart giving firsthand. Her approach to giving has allowed her to make an impact on students’ lives while also benefiting from the financial efficiencies. She’s utilized several smart giving strategies, including donating from her IRA and leveraging matching gift opportunities to maximize her contributions.
Owens also established the Continuing Unexpected Connections scholarship at CMU, inspired by the serendipitous relationships that have positively shaped her life. The scholarship was established using legacy match, which was very appealing to Owens.
“When I donated the money to start the perpetual scholarship, it was matched. That was a real draw for me rather than donating money yearly. I get the enjoyment of hearing how much is in the scholarship. With CMU that matching was important,” said Owens.
Owens’ generosity has’t gone unnoticed. She loves receiving thank you letters from students, who have benefited from her scholarship.
“It’s nice to hear from the students who receive the scholarship. I believe in passing on kindness. Hopefully someday they’ll give to scholarships too and make it possible for other students to go to college,” said Owens.
The CMU Foundation works closely with donors to help them navigate smart giving options like the ones Owens used. Whether through appreciated assets, wills, minimum distributions from IRAs, or estate planning, the purpose of smart giving is to ensure that each donor’s gift aligns with their goals, maximizes the impact of their kindness and leaves a lasting legacy.
“If you share your wealth in smart ways, you can make a larger impact than you could ever imagine,” said CMU Associate Director of Development Rick Adleman.
Smart giving allows donors to take full advantage of tax deductions while supporting CMU students and protecting their family’s well-being. Each donor’s situation is unique, so it’s essential to seek professional advice. Interested donors should consult a lawyer or financial advisor to ensure they make the most of their philanthropic efforts.
Your generosity can create a ripple effect of kindness — transforming lives and fostering a brighter future for CMU students.
