Embracing Community Spirit

A Season of Gratitude and Unity

Amidst the festive fervor preceding Thanksgiving, Colorado Mesa University continues its tapestry of traditions that foster a spirit of giving and togetherness. The heartwarming initiative, orchestrated by Sodexo Dining Services, has been held annually for over 20 years, where volunteers band together to prepare 150 comforting Thanksgiving meals. Simultaneously, CMU's Wellness division organized the annual Gobble Wobble 5K Run/Walk, supporting the Mavily and aiding The Pantry, CMU's on-campus food bank.

Just ahead of the Thanksgiving break, CMU's Tech community gathered for the annual Turkey Feast, a cherished event, bringing together students, faculty and staff highlighting the excellence of the culinary program and its associated facility. The Turkey Feast is tradition that began more than 25 years ago when a faculty member found out some of her students would not have a Thanksgiving dinner. Today, the program prepares meals for 500 people.

For those who enjoy a more active approach, the Gobble Wobble 5K Run/Walk encourages Mavericks to partake in a joyful and health-focused afternoon. A simple donation of three non-perishable food items or $5 cash supported The Pantry's crucial mission to alleviate food insecurity within our university community.

The efforts of Sodexo Dining Services extend beyond the race, seeking volunteers from November 16 to November 21 for multiple kitchen shifts. Volunteers, through their dedication in tasks like vegetable preparation, turkey seasoning and gravy making, were instrumental in crafting the nourishing meals for those in need.

“Colorado Mesa University, Sodexo and The Salvation Army have been supporting our community for over 20 years with this event,” said Sodexo General Manager Daniel Widhammer. “It all started when a cook asked if he could cook his turkey in the kitchen and give it to The Salvation Army.”

These events encapsulate CMU’s values of gratitude, love and dignity, embodying the essence of the holiday season through unity, generosity and community support. Whether partaking in the Gobble Wobble or volunteering for the Thanksgiving meal preparations, these actions resonate with the spirit of the season.

As we celebrate this season of giving and wellness, let's honor the camaraderie and compassion that bind us together. Through our collective efforts, CMU continues to be a beacon of support and kindness within our community, ensuring that the holiday spirit thrives on our vibrant campus.
