Declaring or changing your major (or minor) can typically be accomplished in one or two simple steps. While these steps are simple, it is important to follow the proper procedure for a major declaration or major change depending on your student status.

If you are a newly admitted student who has not taken classes at CMU yet, work with the Admissions office or your Admissions Counselor to change your major. If you have been accepted as an associate’s-seeking student and would like to declare a bachelor’s program, Admissions will work with you to change your admission status

Major/Minor Change

If you are a current student and are not enrolled in the Compass or GOALS program, you must submit the Major/Minor Changes form to declare a new degree program.

The Major/Minor Changes form lets you: change your major, declare a major, add a double major, add a minor, remove a double major, or remove a minor.

Once submitted, the Major/Minor Changes form is forwarded to the administrative assistant of the department that houses your new major or minor. The administrative assistant will assign a faculty advisor based on your new major and any comments you left on the form. Your new advisor’s name can be found under the My Account tab in MAVzone or at the top of your DegreeWorks.

Associate to Bachelor transfer

If you are currently enrolled as an associate’s-seeking student and would like to declare a bachelor’s program, you will need to meet the criteria for the Transfer to Baccalaureate. The Transfer to Baccalaureate form can be submitted to the Registrar’s office on the fourth floor of Lowell Heiny Hall.

If you are currently enrolled in the Compass or GOALS program, you will need to contact your IRIS Advisor or IRIS Advising Team to change your major. You can schedule an appointment with IRIS.
