In some cases, CMU may be required by the US Department of Education to return all or a portion of your aid if you do not make satisfactory progress in your degree. This process is called "Return to Title IV" and can happen if you earn all F's in a semester or complete a semester withdrawal at a certain point in the semester. 

If this Return to Title IV is occurring due to all F's, you will receive an email from Financial Aid requesting you contact your instructors to provide Financial Aid with your last date of attendance. Based on this date, Financial Aid calculates how much of the aid was "earned." Any "unearned" aid is returned to the government and/or the appropriate lender, which you would responsible for paying. 

After the 60% point in the semester, a student has "earned" all of their aid.
