Captivity and Cosmology in the Indigenous Intermountain West
About the 2024 Aspinall Lecturer
Dr. Seth Archer is an Associate Professor of History at Utah State University and a cultural and environmental historian of North America. He is the author of Sharks upon the Land: Colonialism, Indigenous Health, and Culture in Hawaiʻi, 1778–1855 (Cambridge University Press, 2018), which won the President’s Book Award from the Social Science History Association. A recent article on the 1830s federal vaccination campaign in Indian Country appeared in the Bulletin of the History of Medicine. His new research concerns captivity in the nineteenth-century Intermountain West.
Aspinall Course
The Indigenous Intermountain West to 1900
This course will explore one of the least well-understood regions of Native North America, with particular focus on the dynamic period stretching from the late-eighteenth century to the dawn of the twentieth. Over the course of nine sessions, students will take in mini-lectures, discuss primary- and secondary-source readings, and write three brief response papers. In week three, we will construct a lesson and supplemental readings, as a group, for the one-semester Colorado history course mandated by the state.
