The Colorado Mesa University dance program offers a broad, liberal arts approach to the study of dance and movement. CMU’s BA in Dance curriculum is unique in that we offer a strong technical foundation across a variety of dance styles. Students develop versatility and an appreciation for historical roots and current trends in the field. Within a supportive learning community, students engage not only in rigorous technical training, but are also invited to explore creative experimentation and collaborative possibilities. 

Coursework offerings: A variety of dance techniques, somatic practices, conditioning, movement analysis, dance history, choreography, pedagogy, dance company and experiential anatomy.

Program prepares students as: Performers, choreographers, teachers, studio owners, graduate students.

Dance majors are immersed in a holistic approach to dance studies with coursework in a variety of dance forms, somatic practices, conditioning, movement analysis, dance history, choreography, pedagogy, dance company, and experiential anatomy. Additionally, students have numerous opportunities to choreograph, perform, and teach throughout their degree. Within a supportive learning environment, students develop skills in various technical styles, critical thinking, creative experimentation/scholarship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and communication.

Academic Requirements for Bachelor of Arts in Dance

The theatre department offers an array of dance styles, performance opportunities and travel. Students can study and learn modern, jazz, ballet and tap and each are offered from beginning to professional levels. Other courses include composition, improvisation, pedagogy, history, music analysis, healthy dancer and repertory performance.

All incoming freshmen or transfer students must audition to be considered for scholarships and to gain admission into the Bachelor of Arts program for Dance.

Opportunities

Performances

From their first year in the program, students have numerous opportunities to perform every semester

Choreography

Students may adjudicate work for the faculty and student produced concerts

Travel

Attend classes and perform at the American College Dance Association (ACDA) conference each year

Guest Artists

Learn from and perform work by world-renowned guest choreographers

Leadership

The student-led Dance Society offers opportunities to lead as officers

Academic Rigor

Present research and choreography at a Student Showcase or Senior Capstone
